Nobodys Died Laughing

NOBODY'S DIED LAUGHING

With Pieter Dirk Uys, Desmond Tutu, Charlize Theron, Sophia Loren, F.W. De Klerk, Liz Meiring, Janet Suzman, Eric Abraham

Written & Directed by Willem Oelofsen

Pieter Dirk Uys is a South African legend. No doubt about it.
His style of satirical entertainment is filled with eye-opening truths that I'm sure have had many change their minds on certain stances. From his critique of the Apartheid regime in the '80s and '90s, to his outspoken critique of the current government and issues like HIV / AIDS as one of his most beloved characters, tannie Evita Bezuidenhoudt.

A long time coming, I'm glad this documentary has finally been made. It sheds light on the rather private Uys, his mind-set, process and motivation. Some great archive footage includes short films shot while he was studying in 1970s London and clips from his classic live shows, news footage and more.

In addition to Uys relaying many details, you also get to hear from a variety of local and international artists and figures deliver fond interviews about this national treasure, from Charlize Theron to Desmond Tutu.

The camera takes the viewer to his dedicated theatre at his home in Darling, Evita Se Peron, goes along with him on HIV school education trips, and during the creation and execution of a new play.

An enlightening documentary about a truly fascinating person who transcends entertainment and activism.
